What are the limitations?
It's NOT a notation program; it can't write actual lines of music
with different
pitches and rhythmic values on a staff.
There are already great notation programs available for that purpose.
There
wasn't room on the keyboard for every music symbol known to man, therefore
there are a few things you might
miss. Examples of other items not included:
* Notes higher or lower than 2 ledger lines.
* Multiple
C clefs. There is only one C clef in StaffWriter (middle line=C).
(Our intention was mainly for identification, not for
actually
writing music. We're working on adding another in the next version.)
* Our rhythmic
values are only "stems up".
To have included stems
down would have required a lot of spots that we just didn't have to spare.
If you have need
for multiple lines of rhythms (for clapping, patsching, etc.)
you might try different colors
or placing one rhythmic pattern over another in text boxes
and either box them in with "borders"
or draw a line in WORD (or other app) and position it
through each line-- any way you want
to do it is fine. You just can't do stems down.
* There is no symbol for "pedal" for piano
teachers.
(When
push came to shove we decided that
the teacher could
write "ped" in a nice script,
freeing
up that slot for something else.)
We apologize for
all omissions that some teachers might really like to have.
StaffWriter was
created specifically to make the basic theory needs of everyday teaching
easier, from pre-school through college-- so,
unless you need to compose actual
musical examples or have special symbol needs, StaffWriter
may be all you need.
